Response from 123

I asked the following question:

Starting sometime on Friday evening and finishing sometimes Saturday night or Sunday morning, there appeared to be a problem with your name servers.

For this period, your support site was inaccessible and when I tried to phone you several times on Saturday, despite me phoning during your normal office hours, I was told by a recorded message to phone back during your normal office hours. There was no status message which referred to this issue on your website or in the recorded message.

I have many customers and all of them lost their websites for a significant period. This is totally unacceptable.

Site outages

Between late Friday, 16th November and early Sunday 18th, many of our customers will have found that their websites were inaccessible. The problem has now been resolved and we are in communication with one of our service providers and will endeavour to make sure that this cannot happen again. At this point we can only apologise. Please be assured that we have been working hard behind the scenes to get the problem resolved.

For those interested, the error was caused by a Name Server (DNS) problem which meant that although all of our sites were still available, your computers (and ours) had no way of finding them on the internet. Name Servers are important in translating a website address, like http://www.illuminateict.org.uk, to an internet location, an IP address in the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
